PROPOSAL #3 - SUPER RPG MARIO

sometext

Background

After three all-night meetings, all heavily heated not only due to the broken A.C., but due to the debate on whether or not Mario should weild a sword, a direction for the game was finally decided. The direction they decided to go on was based on a proposal by Kazuyuki Kurashima, a character designer who previously worked on "LIVE-A-LIVE". While it's mostly unknown what was contained in this pitch document, it seems as though multiple copies & revisions were made judging by the pile of documents previously posted. It was likley that this proposal was accepted due to it trying to concieve what an RPG in the Mario world would be like, where-as other proposals were trying to see what Mario would look like in an RPG world.

Story Proposal

There isn't much known about this proposal's story, Judging by previous comments by Jiro Mifune, it seems this was the first proposal to feature the "Weapon's Tribe", and as such also the first pitch to include "Geno" as a concept, who would go through a number of revisions. We also know that, while Yoshi's role had already been cemented as a supporting character, Luigi's role had a lot of debate (though never at a point where he was in the party), ultimately being saved for the game's credits.

Mifune's Comment
The SFC version of #SUPERMARIORPG is made up of young staff in their early twenties. At the time, "SQUARE" was a development style in which game planning and design ideas were shared among the entire staff. This is the pile of proposals.

Sitemaster's Comment
While hard to see, by adjusting the levels on the image, you can see concept art for the Super Mushroom growth mechanic, a staple of the original 2D Mario games. This implies that this was a mechanic considered for the game, but was dropped early on.
